The ambulance sirens cut through the silence of a summers night in the Scottish highlands. Our senior doctor, Clyde Holmwood, had taken a little break to hit some Scottish mountain bike trails as the team had some rest in the build up to the Volta ao Porto.
Clyde had been caught out by some loose dirt on a sweeping berm. After being rushed to hospital, it was clear he couldn't travel to the Volta.
One doctor down, the rest of the team arrived in Portugal in good shape and started with a solid prologue. Yet shortly after the roll out on stage two, race radio went into frenzy after a small group of riders collided with some road furniture when the race entered the outskirts of Guimaraes. “Number 116 is down”....Davide Moneaole had hit the deck and our doctor was absent and still recovering in a Scottish hospital.
When the team car made it up to Davide, our DS and former leader, Brooke Poulter did his best to patch him up so we could get all our riders to the finish. Despite the crash, the riders fought on and put in a strong performance during the opening mountain stage up to Portelinha.
However, the rain started falling as the final riders began the TT on the 5th stage and race radio once again reported a crash after Josue Berlanga slipped out on a roundabout. Our tour was over already. Without a doctor in the team car, Josue struggled on to 37th on the day.
With two team mates injured, Holger Boldsen battled to finish 14th in GC. Not bad but a top 9 overall still eludes the team. Who knew a loose bit of dirt in the Scottish Highlands could derail a whole tour. We’ll return next season hoping for better luck and stage wins.
